About

Judith Saunders

Judith is an artist of vision, purpose and vitality. She has had a love affair with trees for as long as she can remember. Trees are sacred to her because they connect us to the spirit of the earth and the spirit of life. Her father was a forester who showed great respect for nature and all living things. He was her inspiration.

Judith's earliest ambition was to become a professional artist. At thirty-four she decided to leave her nursing career as an instructor and head nurse in emergency and operating rooms to follow her dreams and paint full time.

Leaving a successful art career in Atlantic Canada in 1988, she attended the University of Victoria and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (with honours) in 1993. Since launching her art career in 1979 Judith has forty-eight solo exhibitions and one hundred and eleven group shows to her credit.

Judith and her husband, Michael, spend every summer and fall at East Grand Lake in New Brunswick where she paints and exhibits her work full time. Also, for nine years she hosted an outdoor art exhibition for forty artists and artisans called “Artists At North Lake” to give back to the art community and help local artists display and sell their creations.

Painting mainly in acrylics, her art captures the essence of light and shadow as it transforms forests and hazy shorelines. She has recently completed a series of thirty paintings from the Chiputneticook Lakes area of New Brunswick titled “Nature”. Judith hopes her paintings will remind everyone that the natural beauty of our wild places must be protected for future generations. She believes it is not what artists say about their creations but what their works say to others.

Judith has taught art and given demonstrations on cruise ships, the Queen of the North ferry and to various art groups and school students. She was the first artist in residence at the Union Club of BC in Victoria and is a member of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Federation of Canadian Artists, Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria, Robert Bateman Centre, Saanich Peninsula Arts & Crafts, the “Al Frescoes” Plein Air Painters of Victoria and a group of female artists “Whats In A Decade”. Her paintings are included in many galleries and in private collections in Canada, United States, Australia, Bermuda, and England.
