Event Description
Hybridity and the Boundaries of Tradition & Korean Drumming Workshop
Thursday, January 21 at 7:00 pm
Royal Bank Cinema
Co-presented by the Chan Centre, the UBC School of Music Graduate Colloquium Series and the Korea Foundation
In this presentation Dr. Nathan Hesselink and Mr. Kim Dong-Won will discuss the history and meanings of musical hybridity in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Beginning with a general discussion of cross-cultural encounter interpreted through the lens of musical fusions, they will then elaborate on the specific circumstances that led to a flourishing of such activity in modern South Korea, particularly collaborations between Korean traditional percussionists and Western jazz musicians.
The event will conclude with a hands-on Korean drumming workshop, open to participants of all ages and skill levels.
