Event Description
On July 27th, In the House is very excited to be teaming up with Beats Without Borders for "Masala Sunset," a gorgeous evening of Indian food and music followed by an exciting of night of dancing to some funky world beats.
Opening the evening is a buffet of delicious Indian food served in a delectable garden, surrounded by beautiful trees and flowers.
Dinner is followed by a live concert by the Indian trio Lehera. Lehera was born on a recent visit by Indo-Canadian musician Prashant John to Bangalore, India. The trio brings together their roots in Hindustani, Carnatic and Western music to create a sound that is both energetic and contemplative. Their natural sense of melodic improvisation is boundless and joyful. Prashant (guitar, flutes, vocals)is joined by Prakash Sontakke (hindustani slide guitar, violin, vocals) and Karthik S. (ghatam, mridangam, various percussion). Soaring classical Indian vocals intertwine with exquisite Hindustani slide guitar, violin, bamboo flutes, English vocals and various Indian languages. They are in turn driven by exciting Kannakol (Carnatic drum language), Ghatam (Clay pot drum) and world percussion peppered with funky six string acoustic guitar excursions. Skirting fusionish clichés, Lehera wanders freely into the realm of rhythm and melody.
After the live concert, join us in the living room for some dancing with Beats Without Borders djs Lady Ra and Nils. The Beats Without Borders Collective is made up of 4 established world beat DJs, who spin the best dance music on the planet... from funked out afrobeat to sexy middle-eastern bellydance to bangin' bhangra, they rock the party, guaranteed.
In the House is a multi-cultural, eclectic, and original experience. Live performance is brought into people's living rooms and backyards. The proximity of the audience to the performers creates a warm sense of intimacy that is rarely, if ever, found in traditional venues. In the House is about bringing all kinds of performing arts to the public in an accessible way; it's about showing just how much talent exists in this city and it's about building community, friendships, and relationships.
