About

The Sultans of String

since circa 2007
JUNO Award Nominees and “Canada’s ambassadors of musical diversity” Sultans of String thrill their audiences with their global sonic tapestry of Spanish Flamenco, Arabic folk, Cuban rhythms, and French Manouche Gypsy-jazz, celebrating musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity. Fiery violin dances with rumba-flamenco guitar while a funk bass lays down unstoppable grooves. Acoustic strings meet with electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound, while world rhythms excite audiences to their feet with the irresistible need to dance.

Sultans of String had their triumphant debut under the direction of Maestro John Morris Russell, Conductor Designate-Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Conductor/Music Director of Windsor Symphony Orchestra. Their original world-jazz-flamenco music has been arranged by Rebecca Pellett, an illustrious arranger/composer who has arranged for Toronto and Windsor Symphony Orchestras, True North Brass, and several IMAX and Hollywood film productions.

The band is riding a wave of success from their sold out Yalla Yalla! CD release tour, their national features on CTV’s CanadaAM and CBC’s Canada Live, and their triple nomination for the Canadian Folk Music Awards, winning Instrumental Group of the Year. Both their CDs soared to #1 across Canada on Top Ten national radio charts, and the Sultans of String won the award for Best Variety Act from Festivals & Events Ontario. They also took home 1st place in the International Songwriting Competition (out of 15,000 entries) and just won the SiriusXM Indies Award. The buzz extends into the U.S., with acclaimed promoter David Wilkes (Bela Fleck, Jesse Cook) now representing the band, and tours next season across the U.S., UK, and Australia.

A Canadian string super-group, Sultans of String include 6-string violinist and JUNO Award nominee Chris McKhool (who has guest starred with Jesse Cook and Pavlo), duelling guitar wizards Kevin Laliberté (Jesse Cook) and Eddie Paton (Robert Michaels), bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk), and the jaw dropping talent of Cuban percussionists Chendy Leon! (Alex Cuba). Also available for Young Audience and Educational concerts.
